About the Event

Team Leaders have a critical role in maintaining safe, stable and effective operations. They are the link between management systems and the people who actually operate the process, and their leadership can have a significant influence on safety, quality, reliability, productivity and team performance.

However, in many process plants, Team Leaders spend much of their time responding to problems and dealing with the immediate demands of the operation. This can leave insufficient time for observing their teams, confirming that standards are being followed, developing people and addressing the underlying causes of recurring problems.

This course explores how Team Leaders can move from simply responding to problems to actively leading the operation. It introduces practical approaches to leadership, Standard Work, Process Confirmation, Standard Diaries, waste elimination and Continuous Improvement that can be applied immediately in the workplace.

A particular focus is placed on Standardisation and stability. Standards need to be established, understood, followed and regularly confirmed. Where actual practice differs from the standard, the Team Leader needs to establish whether the issue is operator behaviour, the method of working or the standard itself.

This creates an important link between Standard Work and Continuous Improvement. Continuous Improvement is most effective when applied to a stable and understood process. Attempting to improve an unstable process, or repeatedly using innovation and capital expenditure to address problems caused by variation and poor standards, can result in poor or unsustainable improvements.

The course will explore the relationship between:

Standardisation → Continuous Improvement → Innovation

and the different roles that Team Leaders and senior management have within this hierarchy.

Standard Diaries will be introduced as a practical method of structuring the Team Leader's working day. The diary provides a planned routine for activities such as Process Confirmation, workplace observation, team development and Continuous Improvement, while retaining sufficient flexibility to respond to the operational issues that inevitably arise in a process plant.

The course will also examine the particular challenges faced by Team Leaders who are embedded within their shift teams and may therefore have to manage upwards as well as lead downwards. Topics will include communication, accountability, coaching, dealing with resistance and conflict, and using business systems to support effective leadership.

Practical examples and exercises will be used throughout, with a focus on the realities of working in chemical and other high-hazard process industries.

Who is this course for:

This course is aimed at those responsible for leading teams in the process industries, including:

  • Shift Managers
  • Team Leaders and Supervisors
  • Foremen and Leading Hands
  • Operational managers responsible for developing Team Leaders
  • Managers seeking to improve the effectiveness of first-line leadership

The course will be particularly relevant to organisations seeking to improve the consistency of operations, strengthen Standard Work, develop their Team Leaders and establish a stronger culture of Continuous Improvement.
