About the Event

To drive site safety to world class standards, one has to address the behaviours and attitudes of personnel. This requires an understanding of why people behave in undesirable ways to address the drivers of those behaviours. Taking a blame approach is never useful and indeed can cause a lot more harm than good as issues can be driven underground and conflicts in required behaviours can continue or be created.

A behavioural safety programme aims to bring issues out into the open so they can be discussed and dealt with. This increases employee involvement and engagement – a critical aspect of Behavioural Safety.

While a Behavioural Safety programme is traditionally targeted at occupational safety (slips, trips and falls), it provides valuable insights into Human Factors with benefits for Process Safety, and for incident investigations into unplanned events (including quality and production incidents) in identifying deeper root causes and hence more effective countermeasures.

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Human Failure - Types of human error, why they occur, and how to reduce them using practical countermeasures
  • Safety Culture - Understanding blame, no-blame, and just cultures—and how to shape your organisation’s approach
  • Behavioural Analysis - Using ABC analysis to understand and influence behaviours
  • Performance Influencing Factors - Identifying conditions that increase the likelihood of error
  • Behavioural Safety Tools & Techniques - Practical approaches to implementing a behavioural safety programme

The course is delivered in the context of the process industries, including COMAH sites.
